- The Office of the Surgeon General has identified high-risk drinking by college aged students in the United States as a major public health problem and determined that rates of alcohol use among college students exceed their peers who have not attended college.
- There is a growing body of reputable research which suggests that motivational-enhancement interventions may be effective for reducing alcohol use and negative consequences in the context of prevention for college students; these intervention tools are nonjudgmental and not confrontational, and have the goal of enhancing student's intrinsic motivation to change behavior by educating them about the effects of alcohol abuse.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a research-based treatment strategy that is commonly utilized in helping an individual that is struggling with an alcohol addiction; a major component that will help to determine how successful this therapy will be is expertise and empathy of the counselor that is administering the treatment.
