According to the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, despite campus and legislative policy changes that have been implemented by colleges throughout the United States, there has not been any significant change in the amounts of alcohol consumed or patterns of high-risk drinking over the last 20 years.
There is a growing body of reputable research which suggests that motivational-enhancement interventions may be effective for reducing alcohol use and negative consequences in the context of prevention for college students; these intervention tools are nonjudgmental and not confrontational, and have the goal of enhancing student's intrinsic motivation to change behavior by educating them about the effects of alcohol abuse.
According to data collected in a study done by the Worldwide Health Organization (WHO) , worldwide, adults consume an average of 5 liters of pure alcohol per year from drinking beer, wine and spirits. The average alcohol consumption worldwide is highest in Europe and is closely followed by America.
Adequate supervision and clear communication by parents about the negative effects of alcohol and about parental expectations regarding alcohol and other drug use can significantly decrease alcohol use in teens.
