  • What health problems are associated with excessive alcohol use? Excessive drinking both in the form of heavy drinking or binge drinking, is associated with numerous health problems, including: Chronic diseases such as liver cirrhosis (damage to liver cells); pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas); various cancers, including liver, mouth, throat, larynx (the voice box), and esophagus; high blood pressure; and psychological disorders. Unintentional injuries, such as motor-vehicle traffic crashes, falls, drowning, burns and firearm injuries. Violence, such as child maltreatment, homicide, and suicide. Harm to a developing fetus if a woman drinks while pregnant, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Alcohol abuse or dependence.
  • One study reports that a positive response to the question ''On any single occasion during the past 3 months, have you had more than 5 drinks containing alcohol?'' accurately identifies individuals who meet the criteria for at-risk drinking or the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence.
  • According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, it was determined that college students were more likely to intervene in a drunk-driving situation if they knew and liked the driver, but only if the driver was evaluated to be dangerous and they felt that they would be able to help. Students were less likely to intervene when they were drunk themselves, or when they were afraid of how their intervention would affect their relationship with their peers.
  • A new federal report by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates that about 1 in three young adults (ages 21-25) have driven while under the influence of alcohol.
